Why it’s worth it: Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is beloved for its ability to tame frizz in even the most trying circumstances—think intense workouts, heavy humidity, and complete downpours. It pulls this off through heat-activated polymers, which wrap around each strand to create a protective coating that repels moisture, leaving a sleek, smooth texture that should last you between three and four washes. (Note that since these polymers are heat-activated, you do have to blow-dry your hair to reap the benefits of this product; fortunately, it also offers heat protection.)

The ingredients list also includes chamomile extract, which provides color protection, and glycerin for moisture and additional shine. Allure contributor Jessica Chia raved about this Best of Beauty Award winner's ability to weatherproof her hair. "It's the closest thing I’ve ever found to a raincoat for my hair," she said. Pro tip: If you're ditching the blow-dryer but still need frizz maintenance, spray on Color Wow's Money Mist Leave-In Conditioner, which doesn't need heat to activate.

“Ah, Dream Coat. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Traveling to a supremely humid environment? Dream Coat. Headed to a dinner and event? Color Wow. Busy week with the kids with zero getting-ready time? Dream Coat. It's always the answer for me. But before we go any further: Rule number one when using the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is that it's heat-activated. It's not going to do anything if you're not following up with a hot tool. Now that that's out of the way, this is the perfect blow-dry spray for a smooth, bouncy, and shiny blowout. Period, end of story. No product's held a candle to the effect this spray gives. I've had decent alts, but this product packaging also makes a difference: the pump-top is narrow with a circular top that's so easy to push down when your hair is wet, and your hands are sticky with leave-in; the body of the bottle is also nice and narrow so you can easily wrap your hand around it.

Because I use this product (in conjunction with either the Dyson Co-anda brush head or the GHD Duet Blow Dry Brush), people think I get my hair professionally blown out. Nope! The salon-smooth (and bouncy) finish comes from this silver bottle. One tip that really works for me? Getting really good tension with your brush when using this product. The shine is off the charts.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

"My hair walks the line between wavy and curly, but always errs on the side of wavy (and frizzy) when it needs a hydration reset. When I wake up and my curls are flat and have completely lost their shape like in the photo above, I know it's time for a little extra oomph in the shower, which is where this mask comes in. I use it in place of my conditioner once a week, and always notice refreshed shine and shape after my curls air dry. I wouldn't say I have super damaged hair—I don't heat-style often and haven't colored it in years—but my hair always looks and feels so much healthier after mask day." —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce market editor

Along with frizz control, it targets split ends, provides heat protection, and, for curls and waves, offers light definition and hold. It’s got a creamy consistency that’s pretty rich (a little goes a long way) but won’t weigh down finer hair types, and the mango scent conjures up tropical drinks on the beach. Frequently Asked Questions

    How does frizz form?

So, what causes our hair to frizz up in the first place, and how do we get it to stop? Frizz happens when the outermost cuticle layer of the hair shaft is out of alignment, creating a jagged look. Multiple factors have an impact on your hair and its texture, but one of the most likely causes is dehydration. Frizzy strands can also form from heat damage, friction, and breakage.

What is the root cause of frizzy hair?

Simply put, frizzy hair is dry or dehydrated hair. When the hair cuticle (that protective outer layer) is lifted, it takes in more of the surrounding moisture and humidity in an effort to balance the moisture levels between the hair and environment. After it takes in that moisture, it swells, appearing to the naked eye as frizz.

And dryness and damage are what lead to that lifted cuticle. Rose and Los Angeles-based hairstylist Chris Russell both cite dehydration; Patchett adds heat and chemical damage to the list. You could also be washing your hair a little too frequently, “especially if you have dry, curly, or textured hair,” says Patchett.

What kind of hair products should I use for frizzy hair?

A frizz-fighting hair routine starts in the shower—namely, with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. You’ll also want to make use of “hair masks, leave-in conditioners, and hair serums; I would suggest using all three if you really want to make sure that you are keeping your hair hydrated,” says Patchett. Ingredients-wise, as New York City-based hairstylist Paul Labrecque previously told Allure, "naturally moisturizing ingredients”—such as shea butter and nut oils—“will smooth the hair shaft but not overly weigh the hair down."

As you move on to styling, Russell recommends using heat protectants and anti-humidity finishing products; indeed, the latter might be the most valuable of all. “If a big cause of frizz is damaged hair, I want to make sure none of my tools are causing more heat damage,” he says. “My clients’ hair depends on me using hot tools intentionally.”

If you’re not heat-styling but still want to target frizz, Atkin says to elevate your post-shower, damp hair regimen with conditioning, moisture-replenishing products. When air-drying, foregoing a wrap altogether is key to minimizing frizz, but if you'd prefer your floors to stay dry, Atkin suggests using a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt to wring out the excess water.

And if the arsenal of products feels a touch overwhelming, there are longer-term options. “If you would like something slightly more permanent, I suggest a smoothing treatment like Lasio [a keratin treatment], which will eliminate frizz, but the hair will still have natural volume and movement,” says Patchett.

What are common mistakes in treating frizz?

    • Getting too touchy-feely: If you decide to air-dry, do your absolute best not to touch your hair after applying your styling products. This can loosen shorter hairs and create friction on the cuticle, causing frizz to form, says Patchett. “Your best bet is to let your hair fully dry before moving it around,” she adds.
    • Being too conservative with products: “People tend to be very reserved with how much product they use,” says Patchett. “I recommend reading the label’s suggestion, starting there, and adding more product depending on your hair density.” Remember, these serums, leave-ins, and oils are crucial for moisture. And consider dampening your hair a quick fix and only that. “Applying water will only temporarily smooth the frizz,” explains Rose. So, if you aren’t locking in that hydration, it will return.
    • Using heat irresponsibly: Since damaged hair can lead to frizz—and heat can lead to damage—always start with a heat protectant and use the lowest possible temperature that will yield the desired results on your hair type. “I want to make sure none of my tools are causing more heat damage,” says Russell. “My priority is moisture first, then protection.”

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certain products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind. Many are created in order to address a concern (dandruff, breakage, brittleness) or to work most effectively for a specific hair type (4C curls, wavy hair, gray hair). You wouldn’t want to pick up a purple shampoo that’s only been reviewed by someone with, say, auburn hair, or a diffuser that’s never been tested by anyone with curls—right?

For our review of the best frizzy hair products, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hairstylists who all want frizz-minimizing formulations for their own hair-care routines. Testers considered performance across four primary categories: efficacy, texture and experience, fragrance, and packaging. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Comfort zones get a lot of bad press. The truth is, a little comfort sounds pretty nice right about now. Is that so wrong? As we enter fall, it’s only natural to want to retreat into a simpler way of living. And fall hair trends follow suit: easy, soft, and comfortable in the best way possible.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try something new. It just means finding a style or color that asks little of you and gives the same polish as your favorite cashmere sweater or trusty, worn-in leather jacket. A lightly textured bob haircut you can easily tuck behind your ear. Flexible, wispy bangs that don’t force you to commit to daily styling. Or a softer, gentler shag after a season of rock-and-roll edge.

For color, it means melty chocolate brunettes and toasty maple reds. But, of course, comfort looks different for everyone. What lowers one’s blood pressure might spike another's. Blondes and brondes and brunettes may be out of your wheelhouse. If you prefer a crayon-box color, cozy up to a softer bubblegum pink—fuchsia’s serene older sister.

There’s never been a better time to kick back and relax. Below, the experts dive into what colors and cuts their clients will be asking for this season.

Tight and tailored is all fine and good, but when fall hits, we crave something soft and worn-in like oversized sweatshirts and slouchy wool socks. Think of this airy bob as a beloved pair of boyfriend jeans. Comfortable, but still very, very cool.

“Everyone is moving away from hair that looks overstyled,” says Dimitris Giannetos, a Los Angeles-based hairstylist. “People want cuts they can air-dry, tuck behind their ears, or wear with a little bend from sleeping on it.”

The boyfriend bob fits the low-maintenance bill. New York-based hairstylist Wendy Iles, who noticed it on Charlize Theron recently, calls it “self-styling.” The length falls somewhere between the chin and collarbone, with soft ends and a little movement built in. “I always soften the interior with invisible layers or subtle texturizing,” says Giannetos. That technique gives the look an effortless, undone, “just running errands in my The Row flats, thank you very much” vibe. Perfectly polished is not what you’re going for here.

Bangs are a love it or hate it affair: Either you love the cheeky finish they give your look, or you spend six to eight weeks never truly getting them to stay where you want them. But temptation always calls. “Fall is the best time for giving bangs a try,” says Nashville-based hairstylist Eric Marshall Wright. “They can devastate you in the summer as the humidity makes them fussy.”

Cloud bangs could scratch the seasonal bangs itch without committing to a full style you need to tend to every day. They’re light and breezy and look just as good dancing across your brows as they do pushed to the side. “Instead of a thick, heavy fringe, they're made up of wispy pieces that gently float across the forehead and blend into the rest of the haircut,” says Giannetos. “They create softness without hiding your features.”

Giannetos recommends asking for soft, wispy, curtain-inspired bangs with feathered edges that blend into face-framing layers. “The key words are light, airy, and movement,” he says. “You want them to disappear into the rest of your haircut while still drawing attention to your eyes.”

Face-framing layers can feel like a fresh coat of paint. What may have been tired, limp, and worn-out suddenly becomes polished and perky—an easy, breezy way to look like you got eight hours of beauty rest. “This is one of the easiest ways to make long hair feel fresh,” says Los Angeles-based hairstylist Rikke Gajda.

“Ask for heavily layered hair that starts short, framing right around the cheekbones, then cascades longer and longer down to the shoulders,” says Los Angeles-based hairstylist Owen Gould. “It’s not choppy. It’s blended and soft, with tons of internal movement.”

Gould likes to shape this look with point cutting and razor work through the interior layers, cutting the face-framing pieces at a diagonal so they naturally curve inward toward the chin and float when you move.

The life of a rock-and-roll star is hard—long shows, late nights, adoring fans. So this fall is the perfect time to take a break from the world tour and live a gentler lifestyle, with the hair to go with it. Instead of a choppy, headbanger shag, try a lighter, cozier version.

“This is a modern shag with diffused layers, wispy curtain fringe, and feathered movement throughout,” says Leo Izquierdo, a New York City-based hairstylist and cofounder of IGK Hair. “Unlike the edgy versions from previous years, this one feels polished, airy, and romantic.”

The cut leaves your layers on the longer side without adding any additional shaggy or shorter pieces, says Los Angeles-based hairstylist Ashley Streicher. Izquierdo recommends asking for softly disconnected layers, a blended curtain fringe, and soft, subtle texture.

Pixie shagFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty ImagesFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty ImagesFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty ImagesFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty ImagesFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty ImagesFall haircut trend 2026 pixie shagPhoto: Getty Images

Somewhere between pixie and bixie lies this shaggy devil-may-care crop. Ideal if a classic pixie is too buttoned-up, but you find longer hair too fussy—the pixie shag looks just as cool after being tucked under a hat as it would styled for the Met Gala (see Emma Chamberlain).

Travis Speck, a New York City-based hairstylist, calls it a choppy, DIY-looking cut. As if you got bored and decided to tango with your kitchen shears. “The imperfections are what make it perfect,” he says. While thicker hair with natural texture will have an easier time achieving the shaggy look, you can style straight hair with texturizer and tousle with your fingers. The more undone, the better.

Fall isn’t about going darker (well, except for that whole daylight savings thing); it's about going richer. Not just brunette, but deep chocolate melting into warm walnut. The kind of indulgent flavors and colors you want to disappear into once cooler weather hits.

“It’s about creating that richness, reflection, and incredible shine,” says Richy Kandasamy, a New York City-based hairstylist and vice president of color development for R+Co. “Ask your colorist for a rich, dimensional brunette that reflects light and looks glossy, not flat or overly dark.”

As much as we love a seaside raw bar and a glass of champagne, fall brings more indulgent cravings. Pumpkin coffee with pancakes and maple syrup (the good, grade A, Vermont kind). This deep red fits the menu.

“It’s rich and warm, not bright orange or fire engine red,” says Chase Kusero, a Los Angeles-based hairstylist and IGK cofounder. “Warm reds continue to gain popularity because they instantly brighten the complexion while still feeling seasonal.”

Jeremiah Cook, a New York City-based colorist, agrees. He suggests asking for soft, lived-in cinnamon copper instead of a vibrant red. “Let your stylist know you’d like warmth with a natural dimension that grows out gracefully.” But a heads up: “Depending on the starting level, hair may need to be gently lifted before depositing customized copper, gold, and cinnamon tones,” he says. Ashy blondes or those with naturally lighter color will have an easier time getting this kind of yummy dimension.

You’ll find this quiet, toasted beige lost in the stacks of your local bookstore. She prefers her stories filled with faraway fantasy and romance, and her hair the same shade as her morning chai latte.

“Mushroom blonde offers sophistication while requiring less upkeep, making it ideal for those who want beautiful color without frequent appointments,” says Cook, who finds that his clients are starting to gravitate toward this effortless color because of its seamless grow-out. “It’s muted, airy, and understated.”

“This shade is perfect for blondes wanting a little more depth or brunettes looking to lighten without becoming fully blonde,” says New York City-based colorist Jenna Perry. Ask for a neutral, dimensional mushroom blonde with blended roots and soft ribbons of beige and taupe. “Everything [should be] toned with a creamy beige gloss so there aren't any harsh lines.”

Amber highlights are like sipping a fireside Old Fashioned. If you catch the color at the right angle, the firelight gives it a buttery golden glow (and possibly a little buzz).

“Ask your colorist to balayage big golden pieces mainly in the front of the hair to match the volume and layers,” says Leslie Shores, a Nashville-based colorist. “They can be foiled or painted on the hair.” The result should be soft, natural, easy ribbons of caramel. Add a gloss for a stronger kick.

We all have our creature comforts. Some of us want to disappear into a giant blanket and watch Heated Rivalry all the way through for the third time. Some prefer to sweat it out at a concert (and then go home and rewatch Heated Rivalry). For the latter set, something a little cheekier, but still gentle, like a pastel bubblegum pink may do the trick.

“It feels airy rather than bold. Not neon or overly vibrant,” says New York City-based colorist Renée Valerie Radoiu. “Imagine the color of freshly unwrapped bubblegum blended with a touch of cream.”

Ask your colorist for a sheer, glossy pink “rather than a highly saturated fashion pink,” she says. You’ll need to start with an even blonde base, or have your hair lightened first, which could take more than one appointment, so be prepared for a time commitment. “Rather than applying one solid color, I like to build subtle variations in tone so the color has movement, depth, and dimension,” adds Radoiu, so the bubblegum has a little, you know, pop!

    TL;DR:

    • What it is: A buildable shimmer eye shadow you can literally apply with your finger
    • What it does: Adds light-catching dimension with minimal effort (see finger-friendly application)
    • Who it’s for: Anyone who wants an eye shadow that works for both low-maintenance makeup days and full-on glam moments

My hot take? Glitter eye shadow is one of the best hacks for no-makeup days.

I know, it sounds like a paradox, but let me explain. Shimmer has a reputation for being reserved for nights out, but I started to notice that when I was only wearing mascara, my bare eyelids were pulling the focus.

So when in doubt, add shimmer. The fix may seem counterintuitive, but now it’s my go-to—and this buildable glitter shadow from Half Magic is the one I keep reaching for. Yes, it’s made by the creator of the iconic glittery looks from Euphoria, makeup artist Donni Davy, but don’t let that make you think it’s too dramatic for everyday wear.

Here’s how I use it: I dip my ring finger into the pot, tap the color across my lids, and then gently blend. It may look questionable for a few seconds, but trust the process. As you blend, the formula starts to add dimension and creates a vibe that looks put together without even trying.

It’s versatile, too. If I’m going out, the very same shadow can build for more impact, or I like to dab it in the inner corners of my eyes for some light-catching, Rue- and Jules-approved magic.

Nothing is as refreshing as splashing on one of the best citrus perfumes on a hot, sticky summer day. The crisp, zingy burst of citrus feels like an instant reset for your senses: energizing, invigorating, and enlivening. On the flip side, wearing a citrus scent in the depths of winter is a reminder of sunnier days to come and can be just the optimistic boost you need when you’re deep in the doldrums.

TL;DR: If you’re looking for a transportive, refreshing orange scent, we love Tom Ford's Taormina Orange Eau de Parfum. For something unique, with notes of mandarin, rose, and leather, try Tory Burch’s Sublime Eau de Parfum. And if you’re craving a spicy, cozy citrus fragrance, you’ll be obsessed with By Rosie Jane’s cardamom-infused Remi Eau de Parfum.

The best citrus perfumes often feature notes like mandarin, orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, and bergamot as their “hero” notes, so to speak, but it’s very common to find citrus notes in all kinds of perfumes, from florals to gourmands. Bergamot, in particular, is a popular way for perfumers to add lift and brightness to the opening notes of a fragrance, and neroli, which is derived from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, is a gentler, sweeter floral note.

Why we love it: Orange scents are just as refreshing and sweet as a glass of freshly squeezed juice, and Tom Ford’s version of orange is unsurprisingly chic and sophisticated. Taormina Orange, which was inspired by the sweeping views of a Sicilian summer near the blood orange groves, opens with tart blood orange and mandarin notes, with spicy cardamom and earthy patchouli and oakmoss at the base to ground you in the (theoretical) scenic setting.

“Tom Ford Taormina Orange is an unapologetically citrus fragrance—it leans into the brightest, most tart citrus ingredients like blood orange, lime, green mandarin, and bitter orange—and doesn’t try to soften the sharpness of those notes. What the woody-mossy base does so well is add depth, making it more interesting and complex (and longer-lasting) than many options in this category. Throughout this summer’s heatwaves, it’s the fragrance I've been gravitating towards the most because a few spritzes leave me feeling fresh, pretty, and mentally on a beach in Sicily versus my sweaty underground commute.” —Sophia Panych, content director

But Granado’s Bossa is definitely more on the light and fresh side of lemon—and that’s exactly what makes it so special. “Citrus runs in my blood—at least I like to think so (my mom ate lemons and oranges daily when she was pregnant with me, and I came out with an insatiable appetite for all things citrus)—so this feels a bit like a twin flame fragrance for me. It comes on strong with all sorts of citrus notes (mandarin, lime, bergamot), then you get the warmth from almond and maybe some vanilla. This fragrance also has some notable woody threads, which give it an air of mystery rather than a typical gourmand scent, and make it a good unisex option. The combination is equal parts sweet and smooth, like a luxurious and layered summertime cocktail that you'd feel very cool ordering at the bar. I'm so in love with this fragrance that it's one I want to hoard even from myself! Orange blossoms come from the orange tree (surprise surprise!) and have a delicately sweet scent with just a hint of citrus freshness. Jo Malone’s perfectly lovely interpretation is a bestseller for a reason; because Orange Flower is a cologne versus an eau de toilette or parfum, it has a lighter concentration of perfume oil—ideal for those days when you’re in the mood for something airy and simple but still elevated.

Why it's worth it: OK, first things first: the bottle! How cool is this orb-shaped, frosty white bottle? Good news—the scent inside is equally exciting, a woody, aromatic fragrance with top notes of spicy ginger balanced by juicy mandarin orange and crisp pear. Sage sings at the heart, enhanced by jasmine and lily of the valley, and as the scent develops, it settles into a base of warm tonka and woody vetiver and cedar. Like Sublime, this is a fragrance you’ll definitely want to display; it could do double duty as an objet d’art in your home.

“Never did I think I'd be into a scent created by checks notes Drake out of all people, but here we are! I would've clocked his scents as intense and heady but Cloudar is quite the opposite: light, fresh, and uplifting, thanks to notes of mandarin, ginger, and clary sage. It's kind of like a spa, bottled, but not as herbal-y or woody as an actual spa. It's the type of approachable but unique scent I can wear just about anywhere, from the office to happy hour. I'm not usually into minimalist packaging, but I have to say, the sculptural design of it is pretty cool—even if it does take up more space than your usual perfume.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between citrus and fruity fragrances?

The lines can sometimes get a little blurry when it comes to fragrance descriptors, but citrus and fruity scents are not the same. According to Christina Christie, senior perfumer at Givaudan, citrus notes bring “freshness, brightness, energy, and an uplifting quality to a fragrance.” Citrus scents include ingredients like bergamot, lemon, orange, or grapefruit; fruity fragrances would include ingredients like berries, peach, or pear.

Why do citrus scents typically fade faster than other fragrances?

As Christie explains, citrus notes tend to fade faster because they’re “primarily derived from natural materials and are composed of highly volatile molecules” that evaporate quickly. “Citrus ingredients are designed to create an immediate burst of freshness and impact rather than long-lasting performance,” she says.

How would you recommend making a citrus scent last longer?

To make a citrus fragrance last longer, Christie suggests layering with musks, woods, and floral notes for a longer-lasting foundation. And don’t underestimate the power of a fragrance-free lotion as a base to help lock in your scent.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best citrus perfumes, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from fragrance experts. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

9 Best Heat-Protectant Sprays 2026 to Tone Down Damage

collage of products and editorCollage: Paula Balondo; Source images: Courtesy of brands and editorsSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

Just like your favorite sunscreen, the best heat-protectant sprays are essential for preventing damage. You wouldn't sit under the hot sun without wearing UV protection, right? Similarly, you should also avoid putting a hot tool (think blow-dryers, flatirons, curling irons) on your hair without first using a heat protectant. These essential hair-care products rely on ingredients like silicones, nourishing oils, and humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, to create a moisturizing barrier between your hair and the heat, which can help prevent breakage, frizz, and split ends.

However you’re styling your hair, the extreme temperatures–often reaching up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit–can literally cook your hair's protein structure, leaving it weakened and prone to snapping. What makes this particularly frustrating is that heat damage is cumulative, meaning each styling session without proper protection adds up over time, gradually compromising your hair's health and appearance. The good news is that incorporating a quality heat protectant into your routine is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain strong, shiny hair, while still achieving your desired styles.

Why we love it: Between constant heat-styling and back-to-back looks, it’s no surprise Beyoncé made Cécred’s Thermal Heat Protectant a non-negotiable in her line. It runs on the brand's proprietary StemShield Complex, a three-part blend of shape-memory polymers that flex and bounce back under heat, plant stem cell lipids that reinforce and nourish the strand, and black honey fermentation that helps retain moisture—so your style holds even when the conditions don't cooperate. Underneath sits the brand's Thermal Gloss Blend, a trio of oils (kalahari melon seed, mongongo, and wild plum) chosen specifically because they are extremely resilient to heat and dryness in their native climates. The mist itself is weightless, with no build-up or stiffness, and it works across every hair type and texture, including wigs and extensions.

Before hitting my strands with a thermal round brush (specifically, the Hey Mane It's Giving Body Medium Hot Thermal Round Brush), I spritz on the Thermal Shield Mist. The pump dispenses an extra-fine mist that makes it easy to distribute along my long strands. I apply it all over my hair, spraying a bit more onto my ends to keep them from getting crispy. Why we love it: Less time under the blow-dryer means less cumulative damage, which is exactly why Lolavie's Speed Dry Heat Protectant Spray stands out. Its proprietary Speed Dry Complex, derived from amino acids, is designed to cut down actual blow-dry time on damp hair, so you're spending less time under hot air overall. Once hair is dry, the same mist doubles as pre-styling protection up to 450 degrees, with a moisture-locking trio of hyaluronic acid and rice, baobab, and amaranth extracts that draw in hydration and form a light barrier to keep hair from drying out under heat, plus mushroom extract to calm frizz and defend against humidity. Rice, baobab, and amaranth extracts round things out by forming a light barrier that seals in hydration.

“I'm not sure what kind of magic is bottled in Lolavie's Speed Dry Heat Protectant Spray but I swear it's responsible for the fastest blow-dry times of my life. We're talking around five minutes for 90% dried hair, which is usually where I leave it. (I have fine but *dense* hair, for the record.) It's one thing to have a professional stylist use it in the salon (I was just as surprised then), but for the same results to happen at home with my sub-sub-par hairstyling skills? Ok, this is the real deal. Since I have partially color-treated hair, minimizing heat is a priority, and this blow-dry spray helps me do, well, even more of that. Why we love it: Moroccanoil's key ingredient, argan oil, always brings the shine—and the Perfect Defense Heat Protectant delivers that, whether you're using it on wet hair or refreshing third-day hair. If you need a refresher, "argan oil is unique in its composition, offering high amounts of oleic and linoleic acids, which makes it extremely rich and moisturizing," says cosmetic chemist Krupa Koestline. While it may sound like it'd be heavy on the hair, it's actually very lightweight (promise), as LA-based hairstylist (and Moroccanoil global ambassador) Rachel Williams confirms. In fact, you can use this ultra-light aerosol formula freely on damp or dry hair before heat-styling, whether you're fresh out of the shower or wanting to refresh your waves. UV protection, added shine, and a lingering trail of Moroccanoil's addicting ambery-floral scent.

“After trying many heat protectants through the years, this is now my staple. I find the aerosol delivery of the product to be very effective at spreading it through my thick hair without much effort. It also dries very quickly because you can use it on dry hair. As someone who uses a flatiron to refresh her waves pretty often, I had been searching for a heat protectant I could use both on wet hair after a shower, and on day two or three when I put heat to my hair to refresh my style. This one hits both of those requirements without making my hair feel like it has a heavy layer of hairspray (you know that feeling?) or making it overly matte. Plus, it has that Moroccanoil scent that I know can be polarizing for some, but I actually like! A can lasts a long time, though I like it so much I have gone through many!” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

“This is the most used heat protection in my arsenal for so many reasons. Never mind the fact that it has a really beautiful, vanilla scent, but it’s a spray—which means that I can use it easily on damp hair when diffusing (without messing with my coils), and it isn’t a cream, so it won’t weigh down my strands, which are prone to falling flat at the root. It does a really nice job of detangling hair and also provides UV protection throughout the day. Why we love it: Unlike most heat protectants that fade over time, this one provides long-lasting protection. Color Wow’s Best of Beauty-winning Dream Coat Supernatural Spray defends against heat and waterproofs your style with a glossy, humidity-proof barrier. Inspired by textile technology, the formula wraps each strand in an invisible, water-resistant "raincoat." San Antonio-based hairstylist Ebony Everette calls it a must-have for clients with frizz-prone, unruly, or color-treated hair, as it “offers incredible humidity resistance and leaves hair silky, smooth, and frizz-free without weighing it down."

Activated by the heat of your blow-dryer (Everette applies to damp hair, section by section, before hitting the heat), it compresses strands into a sleek, supple shape, then seals that smoothness so it stays intact through workouts, steam, and even sleep. The lightweight mist won’t leave buildup behind, making it safe for all hair types, including those with color-treated hair and those who wear extensions.

There's no product that's held a candle to the effect this spray gives.

The shine is off the charts.” –Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Why we love it: Whether you're diffusing, flatironing, or silk-pressing, you need a hair shield that protects your strands from damage. Enter the K18 HeatBounce Conditioning Heat Protectant, a lightweight leave-in that not only blocks heat damage up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit but also softens, detangles, and quenches thirsty ends. The magic lies in its patented Resilicore technology, a blend of peptides, proteins, and conditioning agents that mimics resilin, a natural protein able to withstand extreme stress. This technology penetrates past the cuticle and into the cortex, where heat stress really does its damage. Unlike many protectants that can leave a tacky film or weigh hair down, this one sprays on weightlessly and disappears into strands. The formula is safe for all textures and even extensions, making it a universal staple.

“Once upon a time, I used to completely air-dry my hair…and wake up with frizz for days. Listen, I didn't know any better. (In fact, you shouldn't go to bed with wet hair at all.) In the years since, I've upgraded my (albeit still-not-so-sophisticated) post-shower routine to the following: generously spritzing heat protectant all over, rough-drying my hair to ~60% with my trusty Dyson Supersonic, slathering on a hair serum or leave-in of choice on my mid-lengths down to my ends, and letting my microfiber towel soak up the remaining moisture as I watch some TV. After I rough-dry with K18 HeatBounce (which absorbs immediately—key for my impatient self), my hair still feels soft and hydrated, and my brush glides through without any issues. With my colored hair, I'm concerned with fading, and I think HeatBounce—along with the rest of my lineup—has helped prevent just that." —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why we love it: If your hair has seen better days due to heat damage, Oribe’s Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection Spray offers a second chance. This luxe heat-styling spray shields strands from temperatures up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit while actively repairing weakened cuticles, smoothing away frizz, and leaving hair touchably soft with a satin finish. Andover, Massachusetts-based hairstylist Sean Michael says it's his go-to whenever he's using hot tools. "It doesn't just shield,” he says. “It also adds nourishment and smoothness, so hair feels soft and silky instead of dry after styling."

Powering all that behind the scenes is the brand's Bio-Restorative Complex, a blend of plant collagen, caffeine, biotin, and niacinamide that penetrates deep into the hair shaft to strengthen from the root and revive strands from the inside out. The formula also includes brassica oil copolymer, a plant-based shield that acts as a barrier against hot tools, along with coconut water and marine algae extract to infuse brittle hair with hydration. Michael especially recommends it for color-treated hair or when you’re creating polished, sleek looks, suggesting to "spray it section by section before styling, then finish with a light mist to add shine and control flyaways."

    Frequently asked questions

    Does heat-protectant spray actually work?

Both Everette and Michael agree that heat protectants are effective and non-negotiable. It “works by forming a thin, protective barrier over the hair shaft, which helps to reduce direct heat exposure from styling tools like flatirons, curling wands, hot combs, or blow-dryers,” explains Everette. She adds that this barrier distributes heat more evenly to prevent “hot spots” and often contains silicones or proteins that smooth the cuticle and reduce frizz. Michael highlights the risks of skipping it, noting, “If you don’t use a heat protectant, hot tools can strip moisture, weaken the hair’s protein structure, and lead to dryness, breakage, and dullness over time.”

Should I apply heat protectant to wet or dry hair?

Everette advises starting with clean, damp hair, noting, “part into four to six sections and spray or distribute the product evenly from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the roots to prevent greasiness.” She recommends using a wide-tooth comb for even coverage and letting the product dry completely before heat styling to avoid sizzling. For touch-ups, she adds, “Use a lightweight heat protectant formulated specifically for dry application.”

Michael breaks it down by formula, explaining, “For sprays, hold the bottle six to eight inches away and mist evenly on damp or dry hair, making sure to cover from mid-lengths to ends without oversaturating.” He notes that “cream or serum versions should be applied sparingly to damp hair—work a small amount between your palms, then distribute evenly with your hands or a wide-tooth comb. Focus on the ends, since they’re the oldest and most fragile part of the hair.”

Do you let heat protectant dry before styling?

Heat protectants come in a range of textures, from liquid sprays to cream and serums, and for most, “You don't wait for it to dry because they're typically formulated and designed to apply on wet or damp hair just before the blow-dry," says NYC-based hairstylist Cataanda James. She notes that products made for use on already blown-out hair tend to dry faster than those designated for wet application. Plus, those post-dry serums are usually used for straightening or curling irons, whereas most sprays are better for use before any heat; but for curly hair, they can revert blown-out hair if water-based, so it's better to use a post-blow serum for additional heat protection.

Is it bad to put too much heat protectant on hair?

Yes, overdoing heat protectant can backfire. “I am a stickler for lightweight, flowy hair and too much heat protectant can compromise the feel and flow,” James explains. When applied moderately on wet or damp hair, “it absorbs deeper into the strand and allows the round brush or dryer attachment to glide through the strands with ease as the hair dries. Too much, though, just coats the strands, leading to buildup and a weighed-down feel,” says James.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of best heat-protectant sprays, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

There are few things in fashion quite as anticipated as a September issue of Vogue. It's the glossy, grown-up equivalent of a first-day-of-school outfit. But it also serves as one of the biggest beauty moments of any given year. So when British Vogue put Nicole Kidman on its September 2026 cover, photographed by Venetia Scott, the shoot did not disappoint—particularly if you enjoy a beauty look that makes you do a little bit of a double-take.

Kidman's brows are there, technically. But they're playing a rather refined game of hide-and-seek.

Normally, the actor's brows are noticeably deeper than her famously strawberry blonde hair (which has been more blonde than strawberry in recent years). Here, however, they appear to have been matched almost exactly to her hair color. The result is so monochromatic that the brows practically dissolve into her skin.

The barely-there brows are paired with voluminous hair, allowing hairstylist Adir Abergel and makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi to work together on a vision that provided much of the cover's visual drama. In fact, the hair and makeup get even more intense in many of the shoot's other photos.

Kidman has never seemed particularly precious about experimenting with hair and makeup. In fact, she credits a formative experience with teaching her just how impactful beauty can be. “I've said it before, but I used to go to trans clubs. That's where I learnt to do my hair and make-up. I would sit down as a little freckled-faced red-headed girl, and they would make me beautiful,” she says in the interview with executive editor Giles Hattersley. “They would do my lashes and straighten my hair and put hairpieces on me and makeup. I would walk out of there, and I would feel pretty. I would feel like I was transformed.”

Kidman clearly understands that hair and makeup can be transformative without having to be permanent—and this particular transformation is less “I bleached my brows!” and more “What if we made them disappear just for the afternoon? As a treat.”
